Deck specialist

Decks, pool decks and pergolas

Every project is designed for its site, its orientation and its light, then built by the same craftsman. In English, from start to finish.

Custom decks

A deck that extends your home

A well-designed deck turns a backyard into an outdoor living room. Nicolas draws each project before he builds it, so the proportions, levels and steps sit naturally with your house.

  • ✓Hidden fasteners: no visible screw heads
  • ✓Ventilated frame with calculated drainage slope, built to last
  • ✓Itauba or thermally modified Nordic pine, both FSC® certified
  • ✓10-year building warranty (garantie décennale)

Pool decks

Wood by the water

Pool decks are one of Nicolas's specialties. In itauba, a class 5 exotic hardwood, the deck copes with water, chlorine and UV year after year. Each surround is designed to follow the shape of your pool, with cuts that fit the coping precisely.

Details matter around a pool: stainless steel hidden fasteners, a slope that drains toward the yard and never into the pool, and access hatches for the pool equipment so maintenance stays easy.

  • ✓Naturally non-slip, comfortable under bare feet
  • ✓Does not get as hot as stone or tiles in the sun
  • ✓Rectangular, free-form or raised pools

Pergolas

Shade from the Provençal sun

A wooden pergola creates natural shade while letting the air flow. It can be attached to the house to extend your living room outdoors, or freestanding in the yard or by the pool. Common sizes range from 3 x 3 m (about 10 x 10 ft) for a dining corner to 6 x 5 m (about 20 x 16 ft) for a large outdoor living area.

Retractable canvas, reed screens, climbing plants such as wisteria or jasmine, built-in lighting: Nicolas designs the frame with these additions in mind.

Restoration

Bring a tired deck back to life

Bought a house with a gray, worn deck? Nicolas cleans it, removes the weathering and repairs what needs repairing, so the wood gets its color back. If the structure is no longer sound, he will tell you honestly and suggest the right fix.

FAQ

Decks, pools and pergolas: your questions

Which wood should I choose around a swimming pool?
Itauba (durability class 5). It is the level of durability suited to constant contact with water, and it resists chlorinated splashes, salt and strong sun without any chemical treatment.
Is a wooden pool deck slippery?
No. Itauba has a naturally non-slip surface, even when wet. It is also pleasant under bare feet and does not get as hot in the sun as stone or tiles.
How long does it take to build a pool deck?
Allow 1 to 2 weeks depending on the surface and the shape of the pool. Nicolas works on one job at a time, which keeps the follow-up close and the finish careful.
Do I need permission for a pergola?
Between 5 and 20 m² (about 55 to 215 sq ft) of footprint, a prior declaration (déclaration préalable) at the town hall is generally required; above 20 m², a building permit. Below 5 m² and outside protected areas, no formalities are needed. Nicolas advises you on this during the site visit.
Wood or aluminum for a pergola?
Aluminum has a contemporary look and needs very little upkeep. Wood brings warmth and character that aluminum cannot match. With class 4 or class 5 timber (thermally modified pine or itauba), durability is comparable. The choice mostly comes down to the look you want and how it sits with your home.
How do I maintain a wooden deck?
Rinsing with clean water once or twice a year is enough for everyday care. If the wood turns gray over time (a natural, harmless process), a mechanical cleaning can bring back its original color. Blackwood Deck offers this cleaning and restoration service.
